The MICR Line Explained in Plain English
A straightforward look at routing numbers, account numbers, check numbers, and why placement matters.
What the MICR line contains
The MICR line is the machine-readable row near the bottom of a check. It commonly contains the bank routing number, the payer account number, and the check number in a standardized sequence.
Why accuracy matters
Incorrect digits can direct a payment to the wrong account or cause processing problems. Placement and print clarity also matter because financial institutions use automated equipment to read the line.
- Verify every routing-number digit
- Use the correct account number
- Keep check numbers consistent
- Avoid scaling that moves the line
Review your first setup
When setting up a new account or paper format, compare the preview with the information provided by your bank. Run a single test and confirm acceptance requirements before a larger print run.
